Real Gone

Seth Worley

After a brief glimpse into the great beyond, Elwood Holler can't give up on life. No matter how hard he tries.

In 2015, I was invited to direct a short film as part of Film Riot's Epic Summer, alongside shorts by Film Riot's Ryan Connolly and Video Copilot's Andrew Kramer. Film Riot devoted a month of programming for each film, starting with the release of the film followed by new behind-the-scenes content every week.

Sur I'Océan

Elise Mélinand

An initial listen to the work of French singer-songwriter Elise Mélinand will have you wondering where you are — as if you’ve made some sort of wrong turn. But before retracing your steps to find where you might have strayed from your intended path, stay a while. Further investigation reveals a world that is undoubtedly strange but also inviting. Her childlike vocals are set to moaning strings, frenetic experimental beat-work and the frequent use of bells and piano that create a very Tim Burton-esque vibe — creepily adorable. Elise’s music lives in this eerie world and paints a backdrop just begging to underscore equally eerie scenes.

Simple yet striking instrumentation is the key to Drake Margolnick's strength. His Beirut-type vocal and quietly quirky indie folk/rock edge creates an overarching journey that feels both round and complete.

Whatever Doesn't Kill Me (Better Run)

Benj Heard

Once exposed to the contagious pop stylings of Benj Heard, you can just forget about ever truly being rid of him. His catchy melodies are of the can't-get-them-out-of-your-head variety — almost irritatingly so. His melty voice is a huge selling point, as he runs up and down to the furthest edges of his notably broad range. His composition and songwriting are impressive, displaying a good mix of feel from track to track. If a solid pop sound is what you're after, look no further.
